The NFL makes history with Los Angeles Rams come-back this season

It’s been more than 20 years since the Los Angeles metropolitan area has had its own NFL team, and decades since an NFL team has played within LA city limits. But that’s about to change.

But for the first time, the newly-renamed Los Angeles Rams will play a season of football at the LA Memorial Coliseum, starting with a face-off with the Dallas Cowboys on August 13, and rounding out January 1 with the Arizona Cardinals.

“We’re all pretty much over the moon about it out here,” legendary NFL agent Leigh Steinberg told The New York Post. “The NFL might have left Los Angeles, but the love of NFL football never did. And for it to be the Rams to be the team that ended the 21-year drought is practically a Hollywood story itself.”

As ESPN describes it, the process of bringing a team to the nation’s second-largest market was a rocky one. Both the Rams and the Raiders left the area in 1994, with the Rams settling in St. Louis and the Raiders in Oakland. After years of stops and starts, it all came down an hours-long, owners-only meeting in Texas in the end, where team owners traded barbs over what team would call the land of Hollywood celebrities, sunny beaches and congested freeways home.

When it was all said and done, the decision was made to build the newly-minted LA Rams a brand new, multi-billion-dollar stadium in Inglewood, just east of Los Angeles International Airport and south of Downtown Los Angeles.

The new stadium complex has been dubbed “NFL Disney World” and will boast 80,000 seats and 300 acres. Coming in at a grand total of $2.6 billion, it will be the league’s most expensive project to date, according to CNN. In sum, the development will be twice the size of the Disneyland resort in Anaheim, and will include a 6,000-seat performance venue along with 2,500 homes, retail and office space, plus 25 acres of parks.

The team already has its key line-up picked out with the likes of quarterback Jared Goff, tailback Todd Gurley and defensive tackle Dominique Easley. There’s even talk of Los Angeles hosting its first Super Bowl since 1993.

In an unusual move, the league is set to announce three Super Bowl locations on Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Times. The paper goes so far as calling the announcement that L.A. will be a host city “likely.”

“I’d be surprised if we came out of there without L.A. getting one of the three,” Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay told the Times.

Rams officials are hoping to land the marquis game of the 2021 season, which will give the new stadium and surrounding development time to settle in after it opens in 2019. The new stadium will be dubbed the “City of Champions Stadium.”

“We believe hosting the 2021 Super Bowl, when the stadium has been open longer and the Inglewood campus is more developed, will provide a better experience for the fans and the NFL,” Kevin Demoff, Rams chief operating officer, told the L.A. Times. “In this process, though, where all the competing cities have not only put together strong bids but also have a history of hosting multiple Super Bowls, there is always a benefit to having more chances to host.”

Atlanta and Miami are other cities with hopes of hosting.

“I think there’s something to be said for city pride, regional pride,” San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York told the Times. “I think it would be really cool to announce that for Los Angeles, whenever they get to host one.”
