I was fortunate enough to attend the Andre Berto – Victor Ortiz fight at StubHub Center a few weekends ago and came away very impressed. The StubHub center is home to the LA Galaxy, but what a lot of people don’t know is that it also plays host to multiple boxing matches throughout the year at the adjacent tennis court. A ring is set up and with the venue only holding approximately 4000 people any seat in the house is a good one. Since there are not as many people there as one is used to at a public event the venue is able to set up many diverse food trucks throughout the concourse as well as regular stadium fare.
One of the great things about the stadium is that the fighters simply ARE so close to the fans. The ring-walk at StubHub Center is one of the shortest in all of boxing – and the fighters have to pass close to the fans to get to and from the ring — more on that in a bit. The headliner of the evening belonged to Ortiz-Berto, ironically two fighters who have both lost to Floyd Mayweather. Victor Ortiz was definitely the hometown favorite earning big cheers from the crowd on his entrance. Now the problem with Ortiz is that he has developed a reputation of that as someone who doesn’t have the heart to really make it in boxing. Unfortunately he did little to shake that reputation in this fight getting TKO’ed in the 4th round which in turn made the cheers of the crowd turn into boos. Ortiz wasn’t fazed though however when left the ring to return to the locker room a fan threw a pizza box at Ortiz causing his security team to swarm the fan. It was an interesting end to a great fight and I recommend all fight fans to check out the venue. Oscar Salido and Francisco Vargas will be headlining an HBO fight there on June 4th and I encourage all fans to check out Razorgator.com for prices!
