Races start as early as 10:00 AM with the Derby itself slated for a post time of 4:34 PM. After last year’s derby winner American Pharoah set the sport of horse racing on fire by getting the first Triple Crown victory in 37 years, the anticipation for this year’s Derby has race fans everywhere scrambling to get a ticket. As it stands now, Nyquist has an edge over the opponents in the current odds, coming in at 10-3 odds over the weekend before the race. Other favorites include Exaggerator and Moyhaymen, who were both at 8-1 odds the weekend before the race. Though Nyquist sits atop the board of favorites for now, Saturday’s race has been widely discussed as as wide open of a Kentucky Derby as there has been in recent memory, meaning just about any horse could conceivably make a run for the garland of roses.
The Kentucky Derby doesn’t just begin and end with horse racing. With races dating back to 1875, this is truly one of the most storied sporting traditions in American history. Between the garland of roses, the Twin Spires, and the call to post, few sporting events feature more iconic moments than the Run for the Roses. But amidst all the mint juleps, fashionable hats and southern hospitality, the Kentucky Derby has something for just about everyone.
