US Open Golf Tickets Down 49% in Price Over Last Year

The U.S. Open is the second of four major championships of men’s professional golf. This year the national championship of the United States Golf Association will be held  at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina June 12-15. In fact, for the first time in USGA history, the resort will host the U.S. Open and the U.S. Women’s Open Championships in consecutive weeks. Not only is Pinehurst making history with back-to-back weekends, but so too are the price of US Open golf tickets on the secondary market.

At this time last year, the average price of a US Open all-week pass was $1335. Demand was high at Merion, largely attributed to the early season success of Tiger Woods, low supply of tickets (25,000 spectators), and close proximity to Philadelphia (fifth most populated city in the States). There were just over 1400 US Open tickets listed on Razorgator.com at the end of May.

2014 US Open tickets are averaging about half the cost of last year. Following Tiger Woods’ announcement that he would not play in the major this year as he recovers from back surgery, the average price on an all-week pass was $687. If you’re looking to just get in the gate, you’ll pay about 1/3 of what you did last year. The get-in price Saturday is $90; in 2013, it was $270. Also contributing to the low cost of 2014 US Open tickets is the larger quantity available (more than 3,000 listed) and the geographic location of Pinehurst Resort (1 hour, 20 minutes outside Raleigh). With more than 2-times the number of tickets listed on the secondary market, the far distance to a major metropolitan area, and the exit of Woods, demand for 2014 US Open tickets is far less than 2013.

This is great news for buyers. With cheap US Open golf tickets available for purchase, you can walk the “undulating greens” and catch Irish import Shane Lowry who finished one stroke behind Rory McIlroy at the BMW PGA Championship in England, Adam Scott who recently claimed victory in Texas, and the top 60 ranked men in the world that will be awarded a US Open berth. Plus if weather permits, you can catch the final with Dad on Father’s Day. The price of practice rounds and tournament play are noted below.
