Defensive end Michael Sam was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the 2014 NFL Draft, becoming the first openly gay player to be drafted in the league. Another first? The seventh round draft pick was second to Johnny Manziel in rookie jersey sales on draft weekend outselling the top five picks. Sam’s pro career is not even guaranteed yet, and fans are showing their support and enthusiasm. While the 249th overall pick made history and garnered mass media attention, there were four other prospects that the Rams selected in the first three rounds that have huge star potential. Last year’s co-SEC defensive player will join an A+ draft class that includes the draft’s top offensive lineman Greg Robinson (Auburn), DT Aaron Donald (Pittsburgh), CB Lamarcus Joyner (Florida State), and RB Tre Mason (Auburn).

“The team that got better immediately is the Rams” Heath Evans

By draft’s end, these rookies were already making an impact on ticket prices on the secondary market. The average price of St. Louis Rams tickets hours before the draft was $138, $11 less than it had been when the 2014 NFL schedule was released. Following the first day of the draft in which the Rams picked up both Robinson and Donald, the average price of Rams tickets on the secondary market surprisingly saw a 4 percent drop (avg. $133). It wasn’t until the Monday after the draft that the average prices rose to $161, a 16.5% jump since the draft began. Last year at this time, St. Louis Rams tickets averaged $135 and were sixth cheapest in the NFL.

Date Opponent Avg. Price
09/07/14 Minnesota Vikings $114.48
09/21/14 Dallas Cowboys $185.72
10/13/14 San Francisco 49ers $148.03
10/19/14 Seattle Seahawks $132.16
11/16/14 Denver Broncos $158.82
11/30/14 Oakland Raiders $95.27
12/11/14 Arizona Cardinals $93.37
12/21/14 New York Giants $364.96

After reading about the interest in Michael Sam’s jersey and witnessing the mostly positive publicity around his historic feat, it’d be easy to attribute the increase to the seventh-round pick alone. Especially, after the falling of ticket prices after the first day and the jump after the final round. But, lets not rule out the other talent that was added to the squad that has a legitimate shot at the playoffs. We’ll check back in after the 53-man roster is set and investigate the change of Rams ticket prices then.

Only eight teams in the NFL saw an increase in average ticket price following the draft. Aside from St. Louis, we saw spikes from Chicago (11%), San Diego (6%), Cleveland (4%), San Francisco (2%), with Seattle, Baltimore, and Dallas all at less than 1%. And while the Packers did not see a jump during the draft, Green Bay tickets have gone up 15 percent since the schedule was announced. Take a look:
