College Football Bowl Game Tickets, Prices, Trends

florida-state-semilones

UPDATE (12/19/13): The flaming hot ticket prices that blazed following Sunday’s College Bowl selection on December 8, have sizzled. Like last year, ticket prices for most bowl games are cheaper than they were ten days ago . With the exception of New Orleans Bowl tickets (68%), Las Vegas Bowl tickets (49%), Sugar Bowl tickets (8%), and Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl tickets (3%) every bowl game has depleted in price from 3% – 88%.

Just a few days ago when the price of Rose Bowl tickets spiked on the secondary market, it appeared that Pasadena’s Granddaddy of Them All might surpass the price of BCS Championship tickets for the first time in history. While this may still be the trend, both bowl games saw a steep decline at 41% (BCS) and 30% (Rose) since the selection show after peaking at the end of last week. Last year at this time, Rose Bowl tickets averaged $270, down 38% since bowl game selections. BCS Championship tickets averaged $2,461, down 20%.

T-minus 2 days until College Bowl season kicks off! Perhaps the folks that are benefiting most from their ticket purchases are the renegades of the group, the so-called unconventional rebels who wait until the last-minute. Reasons for the drop in price? Typically demand for College Bowl Game tickets is highest the days immediately following the announcement, especially for teams who need to make travel plans. The top three most expensive bowl games remain: BCS Championship, Rose Bowl, and Sugar Bowl (in that order).

auburn-tigerORIGINAL (12/9/13): The final weekend of college football’s regular season, which included numerous Conference Championships, was thrilling to say the least. Just when we all thought we’d see a team outside the Southeastern Conference win a national championship (SEC has won seven straight titles), we were quickly laughed at by the Auburn Tigers.

Michigan State knocked out Ohio State from the BCS Championship game by clinching the Big Ten title and their first trip to the Rose Bowl since 1988.

In one of the most storied rivalry games in College Football, Oklahoma beat Oklahoma State in the Bedlam Series earning the school’s fourth straight 10-win season. The loss for the Cowboys barred OSU from winning the Big 12 Conference and taking a second trip to the Fiesta Bowl in the past three seasons. Instead 2013 Big 12 Champions Baylor, is heading to Arizona to play in their team’s first BCS appearance.

Bowling Green’s win in the MAC Championship game unlocked an at-large berth for another team from an automatic qualifying conference when they pushed out undefeated Northern Illinois, expected to go to the Fiesta Bowl. While the Falcons earned their first Conference title in 21 years, the Huskies were denied a second straight BCS bowl game. When the Orange and Sugar Bowls passed on taking Central Florida, the Fiesta Bowl had to take the Knights as the AAC has an automatic berth into the BCS. UCF secured their program’s first-ever Bowl Championship Series game Thursday when Cincinnati lost to Lousiville in OT. The Knights later won the American Athletic Conference title outright with a win over Southern Methodist Saturday.

Now that the College Football bowl games have been officially announced, we take a closer look at the price of College Bowl Games tickets, how they’ve changed in cost since Friday (prior to the unexpected finishes), and how each compares to last year’s bowl games at this time.

BCS Championship Tickets

Can the Seminoles tame the Tigers? In one of the best offensive meetings in BCS history, Auburn’s aggressive running game that boasts four 500-yard rushers will try to best Heisman favorite Jameis Winston that led FSU to a perfect season and their fourteenth ACC title. An Auburn win would be the eighth consecutive for an SEC team and fifth for the state of Alabama. BCS Championship tickets in sunny California are nearing the price of Super Bowl tickets (avg. $3,396), but are almost $1000 cheaper than last year’s National Championship game, at this time. The average price of National Championship tickets has essentially gone unchanged since Friday when it looked like Ohio State would play Florida State in the title game.

Rose Bowl Tickets

rose-bowl-tickets

Five days prior to one of the best offensive matchups in bowl history, college football fans will witness two defensive powerhouses battle it out in the same City. The historic 100th Rose Bowl will appropriately feature the Big Ten Champion and Pac-12 Champion in Michigan State and Stanford. MSU makes its first trip to Pasadena since 1988 while the Cardinal will make their second-straight appearance in the “Granddaddy of Them All.” Keep an eye on the line of scrimmage and get ready for an all-out rough and tumble fight, as these defenses are virtually unmatched. Rose Bowl tickets are in high demand, second in price only to the BCS National Championship Game and up 43% since Friday despite the expected participants. Starting at $387 in the upper levels and $1,197 on average, you’ll pay about three-times as much for a ticket as you would have last year to watch some of the top defenders grind it out on the gridiron.

Fiesta Bowl Tickets

Fiesta-Bowl-tickets

The Baylor Bears and UCF Knights will both be making their BCS debuts at the Fiesta Bowl. The two programs whom have never met will each look to top off dream seasons; Baylor’s near point-per-minute offense wishes to extend their school record of 11 wins to 12 while the Knights punishing defense would like to finish their near perfect season to further prove they are deserving of their top 15 ranking.

The matchup is intriguing and despite early rumblings of it being the one BCS game that is not entertaining, we’d beg to differ. Fiesta Bowl tickets are averaging just $46 less than last year when the game featured a pair of teams that had been in the national-title hunt late into the regular season.

Sugar Bowl Tickets

Two of the top programs in college football are headed to the Sugar Bowl: the Alabama Crimson Tide and Oklahoma Sooners. Each coming off a dramatically different end to their regular seasons; Bama lost the Iron Bowl in the last second to Auburn while the Sooners stunned in their rivalry game against No. 6 OSU. Dubbed ‘the best player in the country’ by Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, Alabama Senior QB AJ McCarron would like to finish his college career with a BCS Bowl game win against a team he planned to sign with the night before National Signing Day in 2009. The fifth meeting in history between the two storied programs has ticket prices up an average of $93 for the event over last year; Sugar Bowl tickets are $161 to get-in and $319 on average.

Orange Bowl Tickets

Clemson and Ohio State are pitted against each other in this year’s Orange Bowl for one of the most anticipated college quarterback showdowns in the BCS. Braxton Miller is one of the toughest QBs to defend in NCAA football with his speed and athleticism. Behind a veteran offsensive line, RB Carlos Hyde and Miller pocess one of the most effective running games in the country. Opposite, quarterback Tajh Boyd is the ACC’s all-time leader in touchdown passes and holds numerous career passing records at Clemson. A former four-star prospect out of high school, Boyd was almost a Buckeye. Orange Bowl tickets are the cheapest of the BCS games averaging $210.

BCS Bowl Games Avg. 2013-14 Avg. 2012-13
BCS National Championship $2,118.83 $3,093.39 -31.50%
Rose Bowl $1,197.47 $431.94 177.23%
Fiesta Bowl $239.92 $285.35 -15.92%
Sugar Bowl $319.79 $226.53 41.17%
Orange Bowl $210.61 $126.67 66.27%

Non-BCS Bowl Game Tickets

Based on average ticket price the most profiled non-BCS bowl game is the Cotton Bowl where Mizzou will face old Big Eight foe Oklahoma State. Both programs are coming off tough losses and will look to rebound in Arlington to cap off their seasons. Though SEC teams have won the last five Cotton Bowls, the Cowboys will have their work cut out for them against a Mizzou program playing in their ninth bowl game in eleven years. Cotton Bowl tickets are averaging $380; although you’ll pay an average $61 less than last year at AT&T Stadium, you will be paying more for a seat than at the Fiesta, Sugar, and Orange Bowl.
