Top Holiday Events For “Happiest Season of All”

As we settle into the fall season, many of us are turning our attention to the Holidays. It can be stressful, between cooking Thanksgiving dinner and gathering gifts for our relatives; but the happiest season of all, is widely about spending quality time with our Family and Friends.

Between the craft fairs and ski trips, one Family tradition that I have always enjoyed is a Holiday show. Last year, it was The Nutcracker at the Boston Ballet; such a treat. The Improper Bostonian said, “A Holiday season without The Nutcracker would be like New Year’s Eve without Champagne.” I couldn’t have said it better myself; it’s all about getting into the Holiday spirit, sharing the experience with family and friends, and taking your mind off the stress that we often get caught up in.

We take a look at the Top Holiday Events this season including concerts, theatre shows, and sporting events after the jump.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Year in and year out, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra is a top-selling holiday show! The rock band’s “Lost Christmas Eve” tour is slated for over 100 shows in more than 65 cities this season and is the band’s final installment of the Christmas trilogy. Opening November 13 in Toledo and Council Bluffs, the “story of loss and redemption’’ promises more pyrotechnics and lasers this year, ensuring a spectacular light show to combine with their unique sound. The show’s set includes a rundown hotel, an old toy store, a blues car, a Gothic cathedral – all intertwined during a single enchanted Christmas Eve in NYC. Fan favorites “Wizards in Winter”, “Christmas Nights in Blue” and “Siberian Sleigh Ride” will showcase the band’s mix of matchless combination of rock, heavy metal, classical, and R&B music. New music from the band’s recent album will also be played on stage including “Dreams of Fireflies (On a Christmas Night)”. Trans-Siberian Orchestra tickets average $113 this holiday season but the cheapest tickets run from $40-$70.

Top Holiday Theatre Shows

Radio City Christmas Spectacular

The “Radio City Christmas Spectacular” was traditionally performed in New York City only, famously at the Radio City Music Hall. New Yorkers have been making the annual spectacle a tradition for 80 years. But now, fans across the country have the opportunity to see renditions of the 90-minute extravagant show that features Santa Claus, wooden soldiers, and a living nativity scene. Between November 7 and December 30th, there will be performances at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, and Carol Morsani Hall in Tampa with the bulk of the performances at the home venue in NYC. In fact, the Rockettes are scheduled to perform four times a day during the previously mentioned tour dates.

White Christmas

“I’m dreaming of a White Christmas” is one of the most popular song lyrics sung during the holiday season. Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” was a hit back when it was released in 1942 and has transcended time; a song so powerful that, it is the centerpiece of a Broadway musical. Premiering in San Francisco in 2004, the musical has toured nine other major cities in the U.S. This holiday season, the play will visit new cities including: Oklahoma City, Springfield, Tulsa, Fayetteville, Phoenix, Milwaukee, Baltimore, Des Moines, San Diego, and Dallas. Residents and visitors will get a chance to get into the holiday spirit; White Christmas will transport you to a magical world of sleigh rides, snow fall, and kids enjoying the true meaning of Christmas. The revival is appropriate for all ages.

Top Holiday Sporting Events

Following your annual turkey trot or your organized Thanksgiving neighborhood flag football game, take the Family to a professional game, America’s game. For NFL fans in Detroit and Dallas, a Thanksgiving Day game has become a way of life.

This year the Green Bay Packers will visit Ford Field; the Lions-Packers division rivalry is the longest continuously running rivalry in the league. Currently, the two teams are a top the NFC North which should make for a competitive game; it was Green Bay who took the Week 5 matchup at home. The matchup marks the 21st time the two teams have met on Thanksgiving.

The Cowboys will host the Oakland Raiders on Thanksgiving Day in 2013. The two football programs met four years ago to the day and it was the Cowboys who came out on top. Expect a similar result this year; Tony Romo had to settle for his first Thanksgiving loss last year against the Redskins and I’d imagine he’s determined not to let that happen again.

While the reigning Super Bowl Champions Baltimore Ravens did not get to open the season at home due to a MLB conflict, the team will host the Thursday night Thanksgiving game against the Steelers. The Ravens-Steelers rivalry is one of the NFL’s best, and when the two teams met in Week 7 it was the then, 1-4 Steelers, that got the W at home.

NFL Thanksgiving Where Avg. Price Cheapest Ticket
Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions Ford Field
$205.74 $105.00
Oakland Raiders vs. Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium
$265.54 $90.00
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens M&T Bank Stadium
$326.03 $104.00

Christmas Day has become the most anticipated regular-season day of the NBA season. Five of the best matchups occur annually on December 25, in front of sold-out crowds. In the past, the League would schedule in-state rivalry games so that the players got the chance to spend time with their family during the Holiday. This year, those games will be played in Texas and California. A more popular trend this year however, are games played against the top players and teams in the NBA. Realistically, any of the high-caliber Christmas matchups could be precedent of what’s to come in the Conference or NBA Finals.

The first matchup of the day, Chicago Bulls vs. Brooklyn Nets, is a rematch of last year’s seven game series in the first round of the playoffs. But, unlike last year both rosters have significantly changed – the Bulls superstar Derrick Rose is back from his injury and the Nets have added Celtics veterans Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry. These two big market teams will kickoff NBA Christmas at noon EST.

Another star-studded NBA game will be played in New York two-and-half hours later at Madison Square Garden between the OKC Thunder and New York Knicks. The New York Knicks have played the most games on Christmas Day in the league. In 2013, we’ll see 3x NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant and (hopefully) his flashy 3x NBA All-Star sidekick Russell Westbrook compete against last year’s scoring leader Carmelo Anthony and recently acquired Metta World Peace and Andrea Bargnani.

Kobe Bryant is the all-time Christmas Day scorer and has played the most games on Christmas Day; pending his health, the Black Mamba will play his third Christmas Day game against LeBron James this year. The two most popular players in the World are surrounded by other fan favorites including Pau Gasol and Steve Nash of the Lakers and Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh of the two-time NBA Champion Miami Heat.
