After serving just one year as a judge on American Idol, Mariah Carey has announced that she’ll be leaving the show. While the exit has been long-rumored, especially since Mariah’s split from manager and fellow former Idol judge Randy Jackson, it was confirmed on twitter last night through Carey’s publicity firm. The firm also announced plans for Mariah’s upcoming world tour.

Details of the tour are still scarce, but it is believed to begin in Asia sometime in October. Regardless of the tour, it is not clear that Mariah would return to American Idol next season. Mariah’s feud with judge Nicki Minaj did not succeed in giving the show a boost in viewership, and the show received some of its worst ratings ever. It was also announced yesterday that Minaj will not return.
Despite Idol’s lack of success, Mariah still has a strong global brand, given the global popularity of her new single “#Beautiful”. Mariah played a series of international show earlier this year in Australia to mixed reviews. Some called her performance lackluster and awkward, while others called Mariah’s voice “as powerful as it was 20 years ago”. It will be interesting to see the early reviews from her upcoming tour and whether any U.S. dates are announced. Check out the music video for “#Beautiful” below.
