2013 NHL Playoffs Tickets – Stanley Cup Playoff Tickets – Second Round

The field is set and so too are dates and times for the 2013 Stanley Cup Conference Semifinal round. The second round of the NHL Playoffs begins Tuesday, May 14th. The average second round NHL Playoffs tickets are $305 ($1 less per seat than the first round). The New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, and Chicago Blackhawks second round tickets at home are cheaper than their first round tickets. Detroit Red Wings tickets in the Semifinal round are the cheapest (avg. $184) and New York Rangers tickets are the most expensive (avg. $423).

The Penguins advanced to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and will face the Ottawa Senators for the fourth time in seven postseasons. After surviving a tough Islanders team in the first round, the Penguins will have to battle to get a series win over the Senators – a seven seed who was victorious over a two seed in round one. Ottawa knocked out the Montreal Canadiens Thursday with a 6-1 victory in Game 5. Ottwawa Senators tickets are averaging $84 less than Pittsburgh Penguins tickets at a cost of $254. Surprisingly, Senators semifinals tickets are averaging $123 less per seat than Senators quarterfinals tickets had on the secondary market. Penguins semifinals tickets are averaging $337, 25% increase from quarterfinals tickets at Consol Energy Center. The average cost of the Penguins vs. Senators Conference Semifinals matchup is $276.

NHL Playoff Tickets - Boston Bruins (4) vs. New York Rangers (6)

The Bruins pulled off an epic win last night – down 4-1 in the third period, Boston scored 3 goals to tie the game and eventually win in overtime against the Toronto Maple Leafs. New York advanced to the second round in a much different fashion – the Rangers shutout the Capitals 5-0, winning their first playoff game 7 on the road in franchise history. The two teams will now meet in the Eastern Conference Semifinals; the Bruins with home-ice advantage. Boston Bruins tickets are cheaper than New York Rangers tickets, averaging $352 ($100 more than first round tickets at TD Garden). Tickets at Madison Square Garden in the second round average $423; although the Rangers have the most expensive second round ticket, New York tickets are down $20 since the first round. All in all, the Boston vs. Rangers series is averaging $378 on the secondary market and is the most expensive of the four semifinal matchups.

The Sharks swept the higher-seeded Vancouver Canucks last Tuesday to become the first team to advance to the second round. Despite being seeded at #2 and #7, this is a relatively even matchup. The two teams split the season series. Both Montreal Canadiens tickets and Ottawa Senators tickets are more expensive than the League average, making this Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series one of the highest priced in the first round. The longtime rivals will meet again in the Stanley Cup Playoffs – the two teams have had four playoff encounters in five seasons. It was the Rangers who came out on top in last year’s semifinals that went to seven games. NHL Playoff Tickets - Chicago Blackhawks (1) vs. Minnesota Wild (8)

Even though the Chicago Blackhawks will be without two of their players for Game 1 of their first round playoff series, expect the team (who gave up a league-low 102 goals this season) to advance to the Semifinals. The Wild are making their first post-season appearance since 2008. Tickets to watch the Blackhawks vs. Wild at United Center are averaging $132 more than a seat at Xcel Energy Center. Today the average ticket price to Game 1 in Chicago was down 31% since 4/18 & 24% ($77 a ticket) since Friday indicating that prices fell as the game approached.

The Ducks are 1-2 this shortened season against the Red Wings, and the winner has always been victorious on the road. If that is any indication of what is to come during the first round – the Red Wings may pull off the upset. It will be the sixth time the two teams have met in the playoffs. The Ducks vs. Red Wings matchup is the cheapest series in the first round with a get-in price as low as $22 in Anaheim and $35 in Detroit.

Both the Canucks and Sharks have played well at home this season – Vancouver won eight of their last nine and San Jose went 17-2-5 at home.  Home-ice advantage may be just that in this series. The Canucks will be looking for their first win against the Sharks this season after losing 2 away matches and 1 at Rogers Arena. Game 3 in San Jose is the cheapest game this series, averaging $218.

Rewind to the second round of the playoffs last year – the Los Angeles Kings swept the Blues and went on to win the Stanley Cup. The reigning champs have won eight straight against the St. Louis Blues but will need to improve on the road this Playoffs to advance.     I like the way the owners try to make up the $ lost in a shortened season by charging the fans who supported them (despite a strike) by touching the consumer. Be careful owners on what you charge fans may revolt when your team is not good and not going to the playoffs.
