Los Angeles Lakers Outlook

The Los Angeles Lakers are the most hyped team in the NBA this offseason, thanks to a couple of guys you may have heard about, two-time MVP Steve Nash and three-time Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard.  Lakers fans are already celebrating and are ready to don the Purple & Gold once again in the streets of Los Angeles.  The Lakers are going to be under the gun every night, because of their star-studded cast.  The average home game Lakers tickets price at Staples Center is $273.  On the road, Lakers tickets prices drop marginally to $259.

The Lakers still have their work cut out for them in the 2012-2013 NBA season when they play the San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder and the Miami Heat.  The Heat added Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis, which makes them deadly from beyond the arc.  Meanwhile, the Spurs and Thunder did not add significant pieces like the Heat but both are looking to make sure that the Lakers do not come out on top in the West.

The star-studded Knicks roster is going to draw a large crowd at Staples and another high ticket price at $449.

Lakers Roster – Starting Five

PG: Steve Nash

Steve Nash provides a vision that is unparalleled in the league.  He has the innate ability to make everybody on his team better.  He’ll likely be the top assist man for the Lakers and this is an area where the team had been lacking.  Nash is going to make the Lakers’ offense run seamlessly.  Some worry about a Lakers team being thrown together, but Nash is the glue that is going to bind this team.  His veteran leadership will be greatly appreciated on and off the court.

PF: Paul Gasol

Pau Gasol had an incredible Olympics, where he proved to be the best big man in the tournament.  Gasol crippled team USA down low and showed the type of play that he is capable of; Lakers fans are hoping to see this high level of play on a more consistent basis.  Gasol’s unique ability to pass is a skill that is going to be helpful to Los Angeles.  Pau Gasol has often been labeled as “soft,” but he was a forced to be reckoned with in the Olympics. That’s a great sign for the Lakers.

C: Dwight Howard

No need to fear, Superman is here.  Dwight Howard replaces Andrew Bynum in the middle.  The Lakers had the second best center in the league and upgraded to the best center, Dwight Howard. Mitch Kupchak knows how to pull a few strings.  Landing Dwight Howard was the biggest news this offseason and rightfully so.  All signs point to a very healthy Dwight and a championship run.

G: Kobe Bryant

This future Hall of Famer can smell his sixth ring.  Kobe has be thanking Mitch Kupchak for giving him the opportunity to once again play for a championship. Steve Nash is going to free up Kobe on the wing and will let #24 roam free as an offensive machine.  Howard is going to demand a high volume of attention down low, giving Kobe touches without a hand constantly in his face.  Kobe will be able to play freely and that is special to watch.

SF: Metta World Peace

World Peace is healthy, focused, and excited for the season.  This is a great sign for the Lakers because World Peace will be lock-down defender that his team needs him to be.  He can also knock down the occasional bucket when left wide open.  World Peace has reportedly fixed the nerve problem in his back that had limited his ability to dunk or make an easy layup. In addition to his back healing, he’s lost weight and gotten himself into superb shape for a deep run in the playoffs.

Lakers Opponents – Toughest Matchups

San Antonio Spurs

Do the San Antonio Spurs ever get old?  The Spurs repeatedly have one of the best records in the league every year, abd they’re extremely well coached by Greg Popovich.  Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, and Manu Ginobli are battle-tested veterans that know what it takes to win.  The Spurs are an elite team that is going to be eager to make another run at a championship, even against the new-look Lakers.

Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder’s athleticism, speed, and offense make them a run-and-gun team that is dangerous to play on any night.  The Oklahoma City Thunder‘s Kevin Durant is a three-time scoring champion.  The big three of Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden were fierce in the 2011-2012 season and now they have NBA Finals experience to take with them into 2013, which could prove to be all that they need to hang a banner in OKC. Although the Lakers added size under the basket with Howard, the speed and mobility of OKC will be a tough test.

Miami Heat

The Miami Heat are still the team to beat.  LeBron James has shown that he is the best player in the world.  After winning the MVP award three times out of the past four years, his first championship, and a gold medal, he is dominant and there is no way around his greatness. James has matured greatly in this past year and he credits his success to his personal growth. The Heat are going to be more potent than ever with the additions of Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis, and the team will be nightmare for any elite defense. Like the Thunder, the speed and power of Miami’s offense will be difficult for the Lakers to defend.
