Gotye Tickets 2012

The first time I ever heard about Gotye was sometime around the beginning of Spring Semester 2012, in my World Civ night class. A fellow music lover was telling me about a wonderful New Zealand songstress, Kimbra, and Gotye’s name was only mentioned in passing because she was featured on his now insanely popular song, ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’. I listened to his song that night and quickly became addicted. About a month later, I heard the song carried through the walls of my neighbors while simultaneously climbing the US Billboard charts. In June, 5 million copies of the single had been sold in the US. Of course, the US was a little late on the discovery of such a catchy song. Making Mirrors was released in Australia a little less than a year before ‘Somebody I Used To Know’ hit the US charts, and had already reached the number one place in ARIA Singles Chart, ARIA Digital Singles Chart. It had also received 5 times platinum sales in Australia by November. But even still, Gotye is not new to creating music – Making Mirrors is his third studio album, but first successful album internationally. Gotye set out on an international tour, and is making his way back to the States starting in August. Gotye tickets average for about $193. Despite his international success, I have to ask the underlying question – will he be a one hit wonder in the States or will he continue to claim the number one spot at the top of the charts with future singles?

About

6372156757_4286e87b86

Wouter De Backer was born in Belgium and moved to Victoria, Australia when he was two. De Backer was a creative child, making art and playing various instruments until he formed a band as a teen, the Downstares. In 2001, he created his first solo album, Boardface, as well as the name Gotye – his first named translated into French (Gautier) using his own spelling. His second album, Like Drawing Blood, caught the attention of Danny Rogers, manager of fellow Australians, The Temper Trap. Two singles off the album, ‘Learnalilgivinanlovin’ and ‘Hearts a Mess’ ranked in the Australian charts and became certified platinum. From there, he created Making Mirrors and found international success. And in case you were wondering how to pronounce Gotye, he states in his About section that it is Jean-Paul-Gaultier. Or go-tee-yay.
