Last year, behind the great leadership of Mike Tomlin, the Pittsburgh Steelers flourished in the regular season, ending the season with a 12-4 record. Although, after the success the Pittsburgh Steelers have experienced in the past, just making the playoffs is no longer acceptable for Ben Roethlisberger and company. After being knocked out in Wild Card Weekend, by Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos in overtime, the pressure is definitely onthe Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2012 season.
The Steelers success last season can be mostly be attributed to their wide receivers, and one would have to expect if Pittsburgh wants to make a run at a Super Bowl title this year, they will need to rely on their receivers yet again. Antonio Brown is coming off a record season, where he became the first receiver to tally 1,000 yards receiving and 1,000 total return yards. If Brown puts monster numbers up again in the 2012 season, it will certainly strengthen the teams Super Bowl hopes. However, star wide receiver Mike Wallace remains unsigned for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers are expected to sign Wallace, but negotiations remain stagnant, and Wallace has not attended team practices. There is no need to worry though, because although the Steelers know they can remain dominant without Mike Wallace, they need his speed and deep threat presence to put them on the next level as a Super Bowl contender.
Along with the play at the wide receiver position for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the defense will dictate how successful the Pittsburgh Steelers 2012 season will be. The aging defense has become a concern in the media throughout this off-season, but one would expect that the likes of Troy Polamalu, James Harrison, and Ike Taylor will not disappoint this season. Not only will these guys show up, other players will need to step up, such as Lawrence Timmons, who received a five year 50 million dollar contract last year. The Steelers added youth to their defense through the 2012 NFL Draft with line backer Sean Spence, a third-round pick, and defensive tackle Alameda Ta’amu, a fourth-round selection.
