About the Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox became the eighth franchise in the American League in 1901, going by the name of the Boston Americans. Right from the start, the Red Sox began a winning tradition by winning the first ever World Series in 1903 with all-time great Cy Young, and have continued this tradition over the past century with seven World Series Championships (1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, and 2007). Although the Red Sox have won seven World Series, which ranks them third all time behind the New York Yankees who own 27 titles and the St. Louis Cardinals who own 11 titles, times haven’t always been great in Boston. In the off-season of 1919-1920 the Red Sox began an 86-year World Series championship drought which is now known as the “Curse of the Bambino.” Boston traded one of the believed to be greatest players who ever played baseball, Babe Ruth, to the New York Yankees. Ironically, this drought ended in 2004 after the Red Sox came back from down three games to the Yankees to win the series and eventually the World Series. This made the Red Sox the third team to ever come back in any sport from a three-game deficit to win a series, joining the ranks of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who came back from three games down to the Detroit Red Wings to win the series in 1945; the 1975 New York Islanders, who came back to win the series over the Pittsburgh Penguins; and the most recent team to do so, the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers, who came back to beat the Boston Bruins. This all being said, even though the season is not going quite as the Boston Red Sox have hoped it would to this point, it isn’t time to panic just yet. The Red Sox have faced much greater odds in the past.
