Back in March, the Washington Redskins traded up from the No. 6 pick to No. 2 at a steep price—three first-round draft picks and a second-round pick. It might pay off. Not only did the blockbuster trade lead to the Redskins selecting Robert Griffin III as the second overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, but excitement in DC surrounding the Heisman Trophy-winning QB has prices rising, up more than 14% in the past week. Only two teams with top 5 picks recorded higher average ticket prices in the week after the draft, the Redskins (+14.31%) and Jacksonville Jaguars (+9.51%). The Jags drafted Oklahoma State WR, Justin Blackmon, with the 5th pick. The All-American receiver ranked second nationally in total receptions and third in touchdowns last season, while his cumulative stats on offense were the 15th-best in NCAA history. Other teams with price increases, regardless of draft order: Miami Dolphins (+6.26%), New York Jets (+4.86%), Buffalo Bills (+4.05%), Carolina Panthers (+3.75%) and New York Giants (+3.49%).

The three other teams with top 5 picks have all seen ticket prices drop: Cleveland Browns (-4.82%), Indianapolis Colts (-7.15%) and Minnesota Vikings (-21.98%). Although Cleveland drafted star Alabama RB, Trent Richardson, with the #3 pick, experts questioned the Browns picking Oklahoma State QB, Brandon Weeden, later in the first round. The Browns will be rolling the dice if both Richardson and Weeden start the season at the top of the depth chart. Last year’s 2-14 Colts lucked out by drafting Stanford QB, Andrew Luck, with the #1 pick—but the team’s 28th-ranked defense will be more of a liability than the rookie QB. The Vikings political bid to secure funding for a new stadium, to replace the aging Metrodome, has stolen headlines from the team’s selection of USC OT, Matt Kalil, with the 4th pick. Without a commitment to keep the team in Minneapolis, and a threat of moving to LA, it’ll be tough to round up fans in the Twin Cities.
