With 30 second spots going for millions of dollars a pop, the commercials during the Super Bowl are always elaborate and fun to watch. Here are some of my favorites from this year:
Clint Eastwood for Chrysler: One of the more serious commercials, Clint Eastwood reminds America that while times may be tough, we’re a nation built to survive. It’s a pep talk at a critical time, and ends with showcasing Detroit and the progress it has made towards saving its struggling car industry.
Matthew Broderick’s Day Off for Honda: I was wary when I heard they were planning a Ferris Bueller take-off, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was an updated version of some of the movie’s best moments, and served as a great backdrop for the CR-V.
Best Buy’s Phone Innovators: The company showcased the men responsible for technology like text messaging, Shazam, camera phones, and Instagram. They even managed to throw in a reference to Alec Baldwin’s plane debacle, showing the creators of Words With Friends being scolded on a plane. It was a neat way to give recognition to some very important people that we have never seen before.
Volkswagon’s The Dog Strikes Back: An overweight dog sees a Volkswagon speeding past the window and decides to get in shape. Then, there is an homage to VW’s hit advertisement from last year as Star Wars characters commentate on the dog commercial, saying it might even be cuter than last year’s Darth Vader kid. Darth Vader isn’t too pleased to hear this. Volkswagon brilliantly used their success from last year to create an equally successful ad this year.
The Voice: The show’s judges Adam Levine, CeeLo Green, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton fight to the death to discover the source of the amazing voice they hear, which turns out to be Betty White. Anything involving Betty these days is a winner, and this is no exception.
NBC TV shows: If you haven’t seen or at least heard of hit Broadway show “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying”, this ad probably didn’t make too much sense. The revival of this show has gained lots of buzz, as the lead role was held by Daniel Radcliffe, Darren Criss, and now Nick Jonas. Radcliffe performed hit song “Brotherhood of Man” on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, and now NBC has used it to showcase all of their hit shows together. Actors from shows like “30 Rock”, “The Office”, and “Parks and Rec” performed the showtune in character together.
“The Avengers” trailer: Not exactly a creative commercial, but exciting nonetheless. Fans are eagerly anticipating the May release of this movie, which features all of our favorite superheroes from movies in the past few years, including Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, and Thor. Since many men are superhero fans, showing this during the football game was a success.
