There is an indescribable feeling that comes over you the first time you walk into Times Square. Your eyes gaze into the neon lights that shine brightly no matter what time of the day it is, and the wallpapering of ads, movie posters and Broadway plays across the four sides of this famous corner. You experience the aroma of foods that you can only experience within the great city. It is like a movie scene. You hear the roar of the masses, both those who walk quickly, making their familiar daily journey in the city that never sleeps, and those who are there to experience it. The streets are busy, the people are quick, but there is a buzz that never goes away… you are truly in New York City!
Many who journey to the Big Apple go to not just visit the beloved city, but to experience one thing that you can only find in New York, Broadway! Though Broadway is simply a street, this road has been a symbol of Theater entertainment since the 1800’s. It was in 1857 that Broadway had its first long-run show, The Elves. Since then, Broadway has showcased the biggest shows and the brightest stars from all over the world.
Some will always, just like a sport, state what their opinion about what is the best show on Broadway. The Tony Awards was started in 1948 to name a annual winner, past winners like Guys & Dolls, Damn Yankees, The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady. Today we have seen shows become classics: Phantom of The Opera, Les Miserables, Wicked and most recent winners Memphis (2010) and The Book of Mormon (2011).
In 2012, with a fresh new year, we will see the arrival of brand new shows and revivals take the stage in hopes of making way into the heart of the theater community, and make their place in Broadway history. This year will showcase some highly-anticipated plays and musicals, making it a year not to miss.
Starting things off, Broadway will welcome back on stage one of the most anticipated musical revivals, Porgy and Bess, staring Audra McDonald. Other musical revivals returning to the stage this year are, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita.
The biggest buzz so far on the streets of Broadway are two shows, Wit and The Best Man. Wit Stars Cynthia Nixon, a veteran of the Broadway stage, and well known for her role as Miranda Hobbes in the HBO series, “Sex and the City.” Nixon stars as Vivian Bearing, a brilliant poetry professor who undergoes experimental treatment for cancer. This play, written by Margaret Edson, is a brilliantly written show. Wit has already started preview performances, and will open up January 26th at the Samuel J Friedman Theater.
The Best Man, written by Gore Vidal, makes its way back to Broadway at the Schoenfeld Theater. This play of political flare follows two candidates at a party’s convention, as they maneuver their way towards the party’s nomination. This amazing play will showcase some of the biggest names of stage and screen: Angela Lansbury, Erick McCormack, Candice Bergen, Michael McKean, John Larroquette and the remarkable James Earl Jones, a stage and screen legend, who is best known for his vocal performance as “Darth Vader.” The Best Man is scheduled to start previews on March 6, and opens up on April 1st.
There are plenty of other must-see shows starting up this year, such as The Road to Mecca, Harvey, Newsies, Death of a Salesman and Magic/Bird. You can also continue to see the current big hits like Chicago, Jersey Boys, Wicked, Memphis and Book of Mormon all year long. 2012 is going to be a big year for Broadway and you don’t want to miss out on seeing the magic. Make sure before you go to check out a full Broadway Schedule of shows, and map out where they are. As for myself, I am looking forward to getting ahold of Wit Tickets, The Best Man Show Tickets and yes, I have to go see Wicked for the 100th time. 🙂 Whatever calls your heart to Broadway, get there, experience the magic, and make tell others what you thing the best show on Broadway is!
